Serbian Novak Djokovic will take over the top spot in the ATP rankings on Monday as he defeated Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-3 en route to his first Wimbledon finals. Djokovic will unseat his finals opponent, Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who also heads to the finals after his 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Andy Murray of Britain. Murray’s loss means the drought of Wimbledon champs will stretch beyond its 75th year as his third straight appearance and loss in the semifinals makes Fred Perry the last man from Britain to win Wimbledon way back in 1936. Djokovic had lost in five of his seven previous encounters against Tsonga.

“It’s hard to express your emotions in a very short time, but hopefully some more celebrations are about to come,” said Djokovic. “I’ve been working all my life for this. I’ve been dreaming about playing the finals of Wimbledon since I started playing tennis when I was four. To be able to be there on Sunday will probably be the best feeling.”

With today’s win, Djokovic moves his impressive 2011 record to 47-1. Nadal is 16-11 in matches against Djokovic, although Djokovic has taken all four of their encounters so far in 2011.
