SUNY Oneonta Director of Athletics Tracey Ranieri has announced that Long Island native Lonnie Mitchel has been selected as the interim tennis coach effective immediately. Mitchel replaces Bill May, who resigned earlier this month to take the head coaching position for men and women's tennis at Southeastern University in Florida. Mitchel brings to Oneonta more than 25 years of tennis experience as a USPTA Level 1 certified instructor.
Mitchel has coached and instructed tennis players at all levels, including club team players and collegiate players. He managed and ran his own tennis facilities and summer camps from 1992-96. He also coordinated many youth and adult leagues and competitions, in addition to his instructing and managing.
Mitchel played two years of collegiate tennis at Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y. where his team was a top-20 nationally-ranked squad. He is a 1981 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J. where he received a bachelor of science degree in business management.
For the last three years, Mitchel has been a freelance contributing columnist for Long Island Tennis Magazine, the official publication of the USTA Eastern Region, printed bi-monthly and annually distributed at the U.S. Open.
In addition, Mitchel has had long affiliations with the Walt Disney Company, Royal Caribbean and Sandals and Beaches Resorts where he held positions in various sales and marketing roles.
