Chanda Rubin to Join USTA Eastern LI Region Kids Day

Former world number six tennis pro Chanda Rubin will be on hand to instruct the participants in this year’s USTA Eastern LI Region Kids Day benefitting the USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Program. Kids Day, which is scheduled for Friday, July 13, will take place at the Malverne High School tennis courts, located at 80 Ocean Avenue in Malverne, N.Y. The event is open to Nassau NJTL Chapters and Community Tennis Associations (CTA).

Rubin played professional tennis on the WTA tour for 16 years. She reached a career high ranking of sixth in the world in singles and ninth in the world in doubles. She qualified for the season-ending WTA Championships four times and reached the semifinals of the 1996 Australian Open and quarterfinals of the 1995, 2000 and 2003 French Opens. She has reached the fourth round or better at all four Grand Slam tournaments. Rubin has been a member of the U.S. Fed Cup team, a member of the 1996 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams and a member of the 1995 Pan-American Team where she won silver and bronze medals. She also was winner of the 1992 Junior Wimbledon title.

“We are fortunate to have such a world-class tennis professional as Chanda Rubin to give our kids lessons and pointers on improving their game,” said Terry Fontana, who heads the Kids’ Day Event for the Long Island Region. “The kids are in for a treat.”

The day’s events, which run from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., will include USTA 10 & Under lessons for newcomers to the sport, games for older players, a pizza lunch, prizes and t-shirts.
