American Serena Williams hit 12 aces and repeatedly hit her groundstrokes extremely hard past 13-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia to win 6-1, 6-0 and reach the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Seeded fourth, Serena hit 32 winners to just three for Zvonareva, who also lost when they met in the 2010 Wimbledon finals.
Serena hit three consecutive aces against Zvonareva and lost only seven points in six service games. In the second set, the crowd began to rally behind Zvonareva, but changed their tune when she began tossing her racket in frustration.
Serena has lost only 10 games through three rounds. The third-time Olympian is the winner of two gold medals in doubles and 14 major titles, but she has yet to win a singles medal. Should she win Olympic gold, Serena will join Steffi Graf in winning all four Grand Slam titles and taking Olympic gold in her career.
