Top-Seeded Radwanska Bows Out of Opening Match in New Haven

Agnieszka Radwanska retired from her opening match at the 2012 New Haven Open Tuesday night with a sore shoulder. The top-seeded player ended play against qualifier Olga Govortsova in the second set. Dropping 6-0 in the opening set and down 2-1 in the second, the world number two-ranked Radwanska decided to withdraw from the match. Radwanska’s shoulder has been giving her trouble since the start of the hard court season. Between sets, a trainer was called to work on the shoulder.

"I’ve been struggling with my shoulder for a couple of weeks now, pretty much since the start of the hard court season two weeks ago," Radwanska said. "I think maybe the change of surface and balls since coming from the Olympics was just too much, and I’ve played a lot this year as well"

Last week, Radwanska lost in straight-sets to Li Na in Cincinnati. She did not want to risk a more serious injury by finishing out her match in New Haven and jeopardizing her chances to participate in next week’s U.S. Open.

Govortsova had previously lost in straight sets in her previous meetings the Radwanska and is currently ranked 82nd in the world.
