Today at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, 2011 U.S. Open men's and women's champs Novak Djokovic and Samantha Stosur were on hand to announce the draws for this year's event. On the men's side of the draw, the top-seeded Roger Federer and recent Olympic Gold Medalist Andy Murray were placed in the same section of the field, setting up a potential 2012 U.S. Open semifinal rematch of this past July's Olympic Gold Medal match.
Potential men's quarterfinals matchups include: Federer vs. Tomas Berdych, who upset him in the 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinals; Djokovic vs. 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro; Murray vs. the fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; and David Ferrer vs. Janko Tipsarevic.
Federer will play American Donald Young in opening round action, while Murray matches up with Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia, Djokovic will face Italy's Paolo Lorenzi, and del Potro will square off against fellow Argentinian David Nalbandian.
Possible women's quarterfinal matchups find the top-seeded Victoria Azarenka facing defending champ Stosur; Maria Sharapova vs. 2011 Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova; 14-time Grand Slam title winner Serena Williams vs. Caroline Wozniacki; and number two Agnieszka Radwanska vs. number six Angelique Kerber.
Kim Clijsters of Belgium enters the 2012 U.S. Open and has proclaimed that it will be her last. Clijsters begins her final pro campaign against American wild-card recipient Victoria Duval. Elsewhere, the top-ranked Azarenka will begin her quest for U.S. Open glory against Alexandra Panova of Russia, the ninth seeded Na Li will meet Great Britain's Heather Watson, Stosur begins her Open title defense against Croatian Petra Martin, the number three seeded Sharapova faces Melinda Czink of Hungary, eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki meets Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, and Serena faces Coco Vandeweghe in an all-American opening round matchup.
