Americans Scott Lipsky & Abigail Spears lost to Russian Elena Vesnina & Leander Paes of India in the second round of mixed-doubles at the 2012 U.S. Open, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(10-5). The Americans had a total of six double faults throughout the match, compared to just two by their opponents. Vesnina & Paes go onto play the team of Lucie Hradecka & Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.
The first set saw Lipsky & Spears dominate and go up a break and continue with the momentum to win the set 6-4. In the second set, the same exact outcome occurred, this time in favor of Venina & Paes. The American team was unable to hold on and put up a fight where they fell to the opponents 5-10 failing to advance. Lipsky a native of Merrick, N.Y., made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in mixed-doubles in his last Grand Slam event.
In other upcoming matches, Noah Rubin, another Long Island native, will debut in the 2012 U.S. Open Junior tournament on Monday. The 14th-seeded Rubin will face Great Britain's Kyle Edmund on Court 4, and then on Court 13, Rubin teams up with fellow countryman Alexios Halebian in men's doubles action as they face Franko Miocic of Croatia & Vaclav Safranek of the Czech Republic.
