Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the 2013 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford due to a left hip injury suffered during Wimbledon. Tournament Director Kim Hall said that organizers ”are disappointed for our fans.” She added that ”unfortunately injuries are a part of the sport.”

All four semifinalists of Wimbledon, Sabine Lisicki, Agnieszka Radwanska, Marion Bartoli and Kirsten Flipkins are set to take part in the event.

The second-ranked Sharapova lost 6-3, 6-4 to Michelle Larcher de Brito in the second round of Wimbledon last month. Sharapova tumbled several times during the match, complaining about court conditions, taking a medical timeout and later saying she thought she strained a hip muscle.

After parting with Thomas Hogstedt, Sharapova has announced on her Web site that she has hired Jimmy Connors to be her new coach.
