Sock’s Victory in D.C. Sets Up Meeting With Second-Seeded Nishikori

On Tuesday, in the first round of the 2013 Citi Open in Washington, D.C., American Jack Sock beat 59th-ranked Igor Sijsling, 6-4, 6-2. Currently ranked 94th in the WTA Men’s Singles Rankings, Sock will be playing the number two seed, Kei Nishikori, in the second round. The 20-year old Sock will be playing with fellow American Sloane Stephens in mixed-doubles at the U.S. Open in August.

Number 107th-ranked Ryan Harrison beat 57th-ranked Lleyton Hewitt, 6-3, 7-5. Samuel Groth was defeated by the number four-seeded Milos Raonic, 7-5, 6-4. Number 22-ranked Sam Querrey won his match against Denis Istomin, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9).

In the women’s first round action of the Citi Open, top-seeded Angelique Kerber defeated Irina Falconi, 6-2, 6-3. The number ninth-ranked Kerber is now 17 spots higher than any player still in the tournament. She will play the winner of the match between Melanie Oudin and Anastasia Rodionova.

Taylor Townsend, who last year became the first American female to finish number one in the year-end world junior rankings, was defeated by Monica Niculescu, 6-3, 6-0, and it was Michelle Larcher de Brito who lost to the 40th-ranked Madison Keys, 7-5, 6-3.
