World number 11 Sam Stosur won the Carlsbad Open on Sunday by earning her first career win against Victoria Azarenka, 6-3, 6-2, Stosur’s first title win in almost two years. Stosur came out strong by not allowing Azarenka to convert on the break points.

"She had a lot of opportunities and all of them except for one I hit a really good first serve and she didn’t get a ball into play," Stosur said. "That’s something I have to be very happy with, to step up to the line under pressure and hit the serves where and how I wanted to time and time again. I know what it feels like not to break serve when you have the opportunities, it can get pretty frustrating."

In their past meetings, one at the 2012 U.S. Open and in Rome earlier this year, Stosur hadn’t been able to handle the aggressive returns and quick movement of Azarenka. Azarenka was coming off injuries at Wimbledon, and didn’t appear to be at her best in the match against Stosur.

The two players traded breaks in the beginning of the match, but Azarenka made three consecutive unforced errors to have Stosur go up 3-1. Stosur had to work hard to hold and fought off five break points to gain control of the set with a score of 4-1.

Stosur had to continue to fight off break points, but she got lucky when Azarenka kept committing errors, which eventually gave Stosur the first set. In the second set, the serve of Stosur helped her out of trouble, and left Azarenka muttering. Azarenka’s level of play never went back up and on a match point for Stosur, Azarenka hit a backhand wide.

"I didn’t take my chances, but she was really serving well today," said Azarenka. "I was trying to do the same thing that wasn’t working. That wasn’t very smart for me to do. But I have to give her credit, she played great."

Stosur won the U.S. Open in 2011, and felt that winning in Carlbad is what she needed in a tournament leading up to the U.S. Open.

"This is a huge boost for me," said Stosur. "I haven’t had great results all year, so to be able to bounce back from last week’s first round loss (at Stanford) and play better and better each day and come away with this is a good boost going into the last Slam of the year."

After the loss, Azarenka pulled out of the Rogers Cup with a back injury. Carlsbad was her first tournament back since her early round exit at Wimbledon.

"I’m so disappointed that I can’t make it to Toronto as I added it to my schedule knowing what an important event it is," said Azarenka of the next stop on the WTA tour, the Rogers Cup, which starts today.
