World number three David Ferrer has parted ways with long-time coach, Javier Piles, and will start the 2014 ATP World Tour season under the leadership of former top 100 player Jose Francisco Altur. The 31-year-old Ferrer, who reached his first Grand Slam final this year at Roland Garros, has been coached by Piles throughout his career.

"After 15 years of hard work, effort and sacrifice, my coach, Javier Piles, and I have decided that we've reached the end of the road and think that it will be best for both of us to start a new phase by going our separate ways," said Ferrer. "This decision isn't because of any personal or professional problem. Indeed, our personal relationship has been, is, and will continue to be very good. But, of course, after 15 years there's been a lot of wear of tear on both our parts and we both need our space. I'm bringing into my team José Francisco Altur, who will travel with me for 12 weeks of the year. The other weeks on tour I'll travel with my physiotherapist, Rafael García, who will also work as my coach."

Ferrer added, "I want to thank Javier Piles for everything he has taught me and invested in me the past 15 years. Without him, I would never have made it where I am today and achieved all the great results."
