Nadal Advances in Rio in 800th Career Match

Playing in his 800th career match, Rafael Nadal was a 6-3, 7-5 winner Tuesday over Daniel Gimeno-Traver in his first match at the 2014 Rio Open. Nadal joins six active ATP World Tour members with at least 800 career matches under their belt, including Roger Federer, Tommy Haas, Lleyton Hewitt, David Ferrer and Nikolay Davydenko.

In the second round, Nadal will be facing Albert Montanes, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Robin Haase.

"Latin America is very special for me, I feel like home,” said Nadal. “The people are great to me and it's a pleasure to be back in Brazil. I hope I can come more often."

Second seeded David Ferrer moved into the second round as well with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The four seed, Tommy Robredo, advanced as well with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, eighth seed Pablo Andujar beat Julian Reister 6-4, 6-3, while another Spaniard, Albert Ramos, powered past the recent Royal Guard Open Chile finalist, Leonardo Mayer, 6-2, 6-0 in 62 minutes.
