Andrea Petkovic, ranked ninth in the world, won the 2014 Family Circle Cup title this weekend, 7-5, 6-2 over the unseeded Jana Cepelova to capture the third WTA title of her career. Cepelova was looking to claim the title in Charleston, advancing to the finals, upset after upset, over the likes of world number one Serena Williams and Daniela Hantuchova, along the way.

It had been a rough few years for Petkovic, as she missed a good majority of 2012 with ankle injuries, nearly falling out of the top 200 in the process.

"I don't know why, but I just sort of broke down," Petkovic said after the match. "I was happy. Normally I don't cry when I'm sad … I cry when I'm happy, strangely, so it's weird, but I don't know. I was just so relieved and proud that I've come back from all these injuries, and I never thought I would play in the finals of the big tournaments again, and so I was just proud and happy and everything just sort of came together."

And for Cepelova, the trip to Charleston was not a total loss. It marked her first ever appearance in a WTA semifinal and eventual finals appearance as well (and a Premier level event to boot). She also jumped 27 places in the WTA Women’s Singles Rankings to 51st in the world this week, now with 1,074 points on the year.
