Also out on the day was American Robby Ginepri in a 5-7, 2-6 loss to the number five seed, Feliciano Lopez. Awaiting Lopez is Alejandro Gonzalez in round two.

Also on Tuesday, it was the number seven seeded Lleyton Hewitt advancing to round two after his 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky. A winner in 2009 in Houston, Hewitt will next face American Sam Querrey for a spot in the quarterfinals, and leads Querrey 3-1 lifetime in head-to-head meetings.

“It was really tough conditions,” Hewitt said. “It was never going to be clean out there today with the wind."
