Novak Djokovic defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday, extending his perfect record to 21-0 at the China Open. The top-seeded Serb is searching for his fifth title at the Beijing tournament, which would also secure him as the end of the year world number one.

“You work all your life and you dream about becoming the number one in the world, the best in what you do. It’s definitely always the highest priority out there along with winning Grand Slam titles,” said Djokovic. “That gives me plenty of motivation. It would mean a lot to me.”

After cruising in the opening set, he faced a little resistance from the young Canadian. Pospisil was up a break and had a chance for a set point up 5-4 in the second, but squandered the opportunity as Djokovic broke back and closed out the straight set contest.

He now moves into the quarterfinals and will take on the winner of the match between Pablo Andujar and fifth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov.

The other men’s match on Wednesday saw John Isner fight back from a set down to oust fourth-seeded Robredo. The American shrugged off a tough first set to advance with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) win. He awaits the winner of third-seeded Tomas Berdych and wildcard Viktor Troicki.
