The Brisbane International title match will feature a rematch of the 2008 Australian Open final, as top-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova will take on second-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

Sharapova continued her dominant play on Friday, rolling past up and coming star Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 24 minutes.

“I’m one step further than last year, which is a nice bonus,” said Sharapova, who has not lost more than three games in a set in Brisbane. “But this tournament is not over. I still have to give everything I have tomorrow.”

Sharapova fired seven aces and won five break points to seize control over the Ukrainian.  In the finals, she will take on Ivanovic, who had a tougher time with her semifinal match Friday.

The Serbian took on American Varvara Lepchenko and had to come from behind to push past her. Lepchenko took a 5-3 edge in the opening set before Ivanovic came back to force a tie-breaker.

Ivanovic won two break points during the first set which allowed her to come out on top in the tie-break. With momentum on her side, she was able to take a huge 5-1 second set advantage, eventually closing it out 6-4.

“All the way up to that point, even though I was 5-1 up, it still felt like a battle all the way through,” said Ivanovic. “I really tried to take it one point at a time and do the things that I’ve been working on and practicing and try not think too much about the score.

I felt a little bit higher intensity today than yesterday, so it was really good to get through. Obviously, tomorrow is going to be another challenge.”

Sharapova leads the all-time series between the two 9-4, with the most memorable of those wins coming at the 2008 Australian Open final, a loss that Ivanovic has not forgotten.

“I remember that Australian Open final vividly,” recalled Ivanovic. “It was my second Grand Slam final and I really thought I could do it. I didn’t sleep much after that. It was a tough loss, but it made me stronger.”

It is the second straight year that the Brisbane final will be a matchup of the tournament’s top two seeds. Last year, top-seeded Serena Williams defeated second-seeded Victoria Azarenka.
