While Tuesday saw the majority of the top seeds advance at the Duty Free Championships in Dubai, Wednesday was just the opposite as five of the top 10 seeds in the tournament were eliminated in third-round action.

American Venus Williams had won 16 straight matches at the Dubai tournament but was unable to outshine Czech Lucie Safarova who won rather comfortably over the three-time champion 6-4, 6-2.

“It was really an amazing match from my side,” said Safarova. “I felt great on the court and my tactic was to play fast and come forward whenever I could, which was really working today, and I’m happy to get the win.”

Safarova was incredibly sharp in the third-round contest, hitting 22 winners to just eight unforced errors and breaking the American’s serve four times to cruise in just over an hour.

The 28-year old earns a spot in the quarterfinals and will take on her compatriot, 17th seeded Karolina Pliskova, who pulled off an upset of her own by beating fourth-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Despite nine double-faults, Pliskova used her powerful serve to fire 13 aces past Ivanovic. She broke the Serb six times to escape the three-set bout and move into the final eight.

Second-seeded Petra Kvitova fought off the upset bug on Tuesday but was unable to shake Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro on Wednesday. The 13th seeded Suarez-Navarro broke Kvitova six times and hung on for 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 despite not having her best serve working.

Up next for Suarez-Navarro is fellow Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who ousted fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-2 in the first match of the day.

Muguruza won five of six break points to get past Radwanska.

“I just tried to be consistent with my game, not to have ups and downs during the match, and to concentrate during all the match,” said the 21-year old Muguruza. “I think that nowadays like there are so many girls that play well so well that the difference between the top players and the other ones is small. I think that you have a chance if you work, play well and concentrate and do your game, which I think I did today.”

The seventh-seed, Angelique Kerber of Germany, was also knocked out of the Duty Free Championships Wednesday. Kerber was beat by 10th seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta who had 18 break point opportunities in the 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

Sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia handled Isreal’s Zarina Diyas 6-3, 6-4 to move into the final eight.

Top-seeded Simona Halep and third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki will play their respective third-round matches later today.
