Rafael Nadal reached the Rio Open quarterfinals on Thursday, defeating fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 7-5, 6-3.

“[I’m] just trying to play my best in every single point,” said Nadal. “A little bit up and down, but I found a way to be through to a quarterfinal. I’m happy for that.”

The top-seed and defending champion Nadal had his serve broke in the fifth game, allowing Carreno-Busta to take a 3-2 lead. Nadal would break back and had three chances to close out the set while up 5-4.

Carreno-Busta saved all three of those break point chances and brought the opening frame even at 5-5. Nadal’s defense continued to work as he was able to break again and took the set in one hour and 13 minutes.

In the second set, Nadal was able to notch a break and saved two break points of his own to seize control and close it out 6-3 for the straight-set victory.

“I think he played well; he played aggressive,” said Nadal, who is playing in his first clay court tournament of 2015. “I’m happy with the way that I played.”

Nadal will face off against sixth-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, who won the Brazil Open last Sunday. Cuevas knocked off Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-2 to reach the Rio quarterfinals.

The second-seeded David Ferrer also made his way into the final eight on Sunday. Ferrer led 7-6(8), 2-0 over the Netherlands’ Thiemo de Bakker before de Bakker retired with an injury.

Ferrer will meet Argentina’s Juan Monaco in the quarterfinals after Monaco took out Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 6-1, 7-6(4).

Italy’s Fabio Fognini rolled past Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarters. Fognini saved five of six break point chances and won five of six break points to coast to the straight set win.

The 27-year old next faces Argentina’s Frederic Delbonis, who will be playing in his first quarterfinal since last July. Delbonis ousted Slovak Martin Klizan 6-2, 6-1 to advance Thursday.

The other quarterfinal in Rio will feature Austria’s Andreas Haider-Maurer and Brazil’s Joao Souza.
