The Stony Brook Women’s Tennis team knocked off 43rd-ranked Brown over the weekend, catapulting the Seawolves into the national rankings for the first time in the program’s history.

Stony Brook beat Brown 5-2 on Saturday for its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in the school’s history. The win bumped it up to 53rd in the country, marking the first time that the women’s tennis team at Stony Brook is nationally ranked.

The Seawolves improved to 6-1 with the victory over Brown and were led by its second and third doubles tandems. Senior Polina Movchan teamed up with freshman Yana Nikolaeva to win at second doubles, while a pair of freshmen, Kristina Vozniak & Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Brooklyn, notched a victory at third doubles.

Stony Brook also dominated singles play, winning four of the six matches to come out victorious.

“We went into this weekend with a mindset that this is our only chance this season to beat a ranked team,” Head Coach Gary Glassman told StonyBrookAthletics.com after the match. “We fought hard against Harvard, but didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities. Today, we did. We definitely came out to win, and the girls gave it everything they had. I couldn’t be more proud of them for this program-defining victory.”

The Seawolves will look to build on its successful weekend when it takes on St. John’s tomorrow at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
