High School Recap: Great Neck South and Plainview JFK Notch Victories

Great Neck South began its season on Monday afternoon, defeating Hewlett 5-2 in a Conference I-A clash. The Rebels were led by the team of Kyle Berlinsky & Andrew Schneider, who notched a 7-6(7-5), 6-1 victory at second doubles to pace Great Neck South to the season-opening victory.

Jericho and Plainview JFK were also able to pick up wins in Conference I on Monday.

The Hawks of Plainview JFK put on an excellent display in singles, getting wins from all three of its singles players on its way en route to a 4-3 victory over Wheatley.

Jericho edged Garden City 4-3 in an extremely tight contest. The deciding match came at second singles as Jericho freshman Michael Wexler outlasted Garden City’s Rob Gavigan 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

The Mepham Pirates picked up where it left off last year, notching a 7-0 victory over the Massapequa Chiefs in Conference II-A. Nassar Ghafar paced the Pirates at first singles, coming back from a set down to beat Massapequa’s Palmer Clare 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

In Conference III-B, the West Hempstead Rams knocked off New Hyde Park 5-2. The Rams moved to 2-0 on the season behind Dayquan Crawley, who stormed back from a poor first set to beat Ryan Cariaso 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Valley Stream South swept all seven matches in a 7-0 win over Malverne/East Rockaway in Conference IV-A.

The Hicksville Comets were also winners on Monday afternoon, beating Farmingdale 4-3 in Conference III-A.
