World number one Novak Djokovic began his run at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Tuesday in a second-round contest. Djokovic fired 24 winners past the Spaniard in his first match on clay this season. Although his unforced errors began to pile up in the second set, the Serb was happy with his result Tuesday.

“I’m really pleased with my performance for my first match on clay against an experienced player on this surface,” said Djokovic, who lives in Monaco. “There was a good intensity.”

Djokovic broke four times overall in the match saved three of his own to push past Ramos-Vinolas.

The first into the third-round, Djokovic will take on Andreas Haider-Maurer. The Austrian dispatched Australian Bernard Tomic 6-7(4), 7-6, 6-4.

David Ferrer of Spain made his way into the third-round on Tuesday as well, moving past Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic. The fifth-seeded Ferrer led 6-2, 2-0 when Estrella Burgos retired.

In the third-round, Ferrer will take on the winner of an all-Frenchman second-round matchup between 10th-seeded Gilles Simon and Benoit Paire.

Grigor Dimitrov had to save 15 of 17 break points to escape a hard-fought three-set contest with Spain’s Fernando Verdasco. The ninth-seeded Bulgarian edged Verdasco 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the second-round where he will take on Italian Fabio Fognini.

Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both made winning starts to their Monte Carlo campaigns on Tuesday. The 14th-seeded Monfils battled back to down Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while the 11th-seeded Tsonga cruised past Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-4.

Viktor Troicki set up a second-round matchup with 15th-seededed American John Isner. The Serb ousted Martin Klizan 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, the eighth-seeded Marin Cilic hung on to beat Florian Mayer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
