Roger Federer cruised into the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany on Wednesday, beating Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 7-5.

Federer, the tournament’s top seed, improved his record to 3-2 over Gulbis by securing the lone break of the first set, and then nailed down a crucial break point at 5-5 in the second set thanks to a double-fault by Gulbis.

Up next for Federer is Germany Florian Mayer, who took out American Steve Johnson 6-3, 7-6(4).

Third-seed Tomas Berdych had no trouble with Borna Coric, beating the Croat 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals.

Berdych broke three times in six chances while allowing no break point chances on his own serve. The Czech moves on to play another Croat, eighth-seed Ivo Karlovic.

Karlovic came back from a set down to upend Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3.
