For the second consecutive year, world number one Novak Djokovic denied Roger Federer an eighth Wimbledon title, defeating the second-seeded Swiss 7-6(1), 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 at the All England Club on Sunday.
The level of play in the opening two sets was exactly what most were expecting heading into the match. Federer seemed to have the edge in the opening set and he had a couple of chances at set points to close it out, but Djokovic did not go away. He saved those points and would go on to dominate the tiebreak to take the opening set.
The second set would also go into a tiebreak and gave fans some excellent tennis to cheer about. An exciting tie-break saw both men win points on the other’s serve and Federer save four different set points, eventually outlasting Djokovic to even the match at one set a piece.
The third set was the first sign of separation between the two players. Djokovic secured a break at 1-1 before a brief rain delay sent them into the locker rooms. After the 20-minute delay, the players returned to the court, and Djokovic was the one who was able to maintain his play over the next set and a half.
He closed out the third set on serve, and nailed down another break at 2-2 in the fourth set. The Serb would break Federer in the final game up 5-3, closing out the match and capturing his third Wimbledon title.
The key to Djokovic’s victory was his ability to break Federer’s serve. The best returner in the world had to contend with a serve that has been nearly unbreakable over the last month or so, and broke him four times in key moments.
“It takes a little bit of everything: Recognizing the moment, having the good intuition, following your instincts of where the serve is going to go, being in the right balance,” Djokovic said of returning Federer’s serve. “I mean, it’s not that easy, especially with Roger’s precision and accuracy.”
Federer didn’t play poorly by any standard, hitting 53 winners to 35 unforced errors, but was unable to win the points in the biggest moments. He had a huge opportunity to win the first set but saw that go Djokovic’s way, and despite winning the second set, was never able to work himself back into it.
“Novak not only played great today, but also this year, last year and the year before that. Well done, Novak, you deserved it,” said a gracious Federer. “At the end he was rock solid. I didn’t play bad myself, so I can be very happy. That’s the way it goes.”
In the women’s final on Saturday, world number one Serena Williams completed her second “Serena Slam”, downing 20th-seeded Spaniard Garbine Mugurza 6-4, 6-4. She was broken in the opening game and overcame a 0-2 deficit in the first set, and even after seeing a 5-2 lead cut to 5-4 in the second, hung on for the straight-set victory.
“Garbine played so well,” said Serena. “I didn’t even know it was over—she was fighting so hard at the end. Congratulations—don’t be sad, you’ll be holding this trophy very, very soon, believe me. I can’t believe I’m standing here with another Serena Slam. It’s really cool.”
Serena now has 21 Grand Slams in her career, one shy of Steffi Graff’s Open Era record of 22.
Also on Saturday, the fourth-seeded Men’s Doubles duo of Jean-Julien Rojer & Horia Tecau won their first Grand Slam title together, defeating 13th seeds Jamie Murray & John Peers 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4.
“I’m extremely happy,” said Tecau. “I’ve been in three finals before. [It’s] very emotional to lose those finals because this is one of my favorite tournaments. I won it here as a junior twice. I wanted to come back and win it as a professional.”
Leander Paes won his fourth Wimbledon Mixed-Doubles title on Sunday, partnering with 1997 Women’s Singles Champion Martina Hingis to beat Alexander Peya & Timea Babos 6-1, 6-1.
But Hingis was not done yet, partnering up with Sania Mirza in just the duo’s second Grand Slam together, defeating the team of Ekaterina Makarova & Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-5. Hingis & Mitrza were down 5-2 in the third set, a game away from going out, but rallied back for the win. It was a milestone for the team, as Hingis won her 10th Grand Slam doubles title, and first since the 2002 Australian Open when she teamed with Anna Kournikova. Mirza won her very first Grand Slam doubles title, becoming the first Indian to ever win a Grand Slam women's doubles title.
