Long Island’s Noah Rubin’s opportunity to play in this year’s U.S. Open main draw came to a close on Thursday, as 91st-ranked Guido Pella of Argentina beat the American 6-4, 7-6(6) on Court 11 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Rubin jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the opening set, thanks to two break points, but saw Pella rattle off the final four games of the set to win the first set 6-4.

Pella would secure an early break in the second set, breaking for a 3-1 advantage. But Rubin answered back, as Pella was serving for the match, breaking the Argentinean to cut the deficit to 4-5.

He would consolidate that break with a hold, and after both players held in their next respective service games, the second set headed into a tie-breaker.

Pella would close out Rubin 8-6 in the tie-breaker, and move on to the next stage of qualifying. He will next play France’s Mathias Bourque.

American CiCi Bellis moved herself within one win of playing in the main draw, defeating Switzerland’s Romina Oprandi 7-5, 7-5. She will play Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko next.

Melanie Oudin came back from a set down to defeat China’s Yafan Wang 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(5). Oudin moves on to play fellow American Jessica Pegula, who defeated Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan 6-3, 6-3.
