Day 12 of the 2015 U.S. Open, will feature a day jam-packed with action due to the torrential downpours that plagued the New York area on Thursday. Due to the weather, a majority of the Day 11 schedule was washed away, as U.S. Open organizers scrambled to adjust the Friday schedule to accommodate the cancellations.

Action begins on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 11:00 a.m. EST, as Flavia Pennetta looks to upset the second seeded Simona Halep for a trip to the women’s singles finals on Saturday. Pennetta holds a 3-1 career advantage over Halep, the most recent win earlier in 2015 by Halep in Miami. Halep is making her sixth appearance at U.S. Open and is through to the semifinals for the first time.

Immediately following, Serena Williams marches toward destiny, bidding for her 26th Grand Slam singles final as she faces Italy’s Roberta Vinci. In the Open Era, Chris Evert reached the most Grand Slam finals with 34 (18-16 win-loss record), followed by Martina Navratilova (32; 18-14) and Steffi Graf (31; 22-9). Margaret Court reached 29 Grand Slam singles finals, going 24-5 overall and 11-1 in the Open Era. Friday’s meeting between Serena and Vinci will mark the fifth matchup of their career, with Serena having taking the previous four, the most recent, a 78-minute win by Serena just weeks ago in the quarterfinals in Toronto.

The men’s semifinals will also be hosted on Ashe, as beginning at 5:00 p.m. EST, the top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces defending U.S. Open champion and number nine seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic comes into the match on a 12-match win streak at the U.S. Open, but is 0-13 lifetime against Djokovic. The dominant Djokovic is appearing in his 11th straight semifinal this season and has not lost in this round (10-0). Cilic is appearing in his 31st Grand Slam tourney and has a 75-29 career record.

“I'm sure that he feels confident,” said Djokovic on facing the defending U.S. Open champ. “He has won a couple of five-setters already in this tournament. He has a big serve. I know him very well. I have played with him many, many times. We are great friends. Great guy.”

Closing out the day will be the fifth-seeded Stan Wawrinka facing fellow Swiss Roger Federer, the number two seed. Federer leads Wawrinka 16-3 in 19 career meetings, the most recent a win by Wawrinka in the semifinals en route to the 2015 French Open championship. Federer is a five-time U.S. Open champion, while Wawrinka will be playing in his second semifinal in Flushing Meadows in the past three years.

“I will need to play my best tennis,” said Wawrinka as he prepped for his semifinals match with Federer. “He's playing really well so far. He loves to play. He know how to play. He had some amazing matches. It's going to be a big challenge … I think I'm ready.”

Federer said of his countryman, “I always thought he was a better player than he actually was, but somehow something was holding him back maybe. I think only once when he really started to break through and he had some big wins. I recall a big win for him when he beat Lleyton Hewitt in the fifth deciding match in Davis Cup in Sydney. He beat him on the grass two sets to one down. Came back and won it. Played unbelievable tennis at the end.

The champion will be crowned in mixed-doubles on Friday as the fourth-seeded team of Leander Paes & Martina Hingis face the all-American duo of Sam Querrey & Bethanie Mattek-Sands at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Paes & Hingis are attempting to win their third Grand Slam title of 2015, which would make them the first team since 1969 and the second in the Open Era to capture three of the four majors in a calendar year. Hingis is also playing in the U.S. Open women’s doubles final with Paes’ countrywoman, Sania Mirza. Hingis & Mirza await the winner of the match between Casey Dellacqua & Yaroslava Shvedova and Anna-Lena Groenefeld & American Coco Vandeweghe, a match suspended Thursday due to the weather with Groenefeld & Vandeweghe up 4-3 in the first set.
