Briton Johanna Konta stunned world number two Simona Halep at the Wuhan Open on Wednesday, downing the top-seeded Romanian 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals in China.

Halep seemed to be on her way to a victory in this one. After dropping the opening set, Halep built a 4-3 advantage in the second, and then rattled off seven of the next eight games to establish a commanding 5-1 lead in the deciding third set.

Konta showed why she has been such a good player in recent months though, and hung tough. She won the final six games of the match to shock Halep and advance to the final eight in Wuhan.

“It was two hours and 17 minutes of very, very tough tennis for me,” said Konta. “Simona really played some unbelievable tennis in parts—she may not be feeling her best, but I’m just really happy I was able to take a few of the chances I created. I’m feeling humbled and blessed I get to come back tomorrow and compete again.”

Konta moves on to play American Venus Williams next. Venus got past seventh-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

“We’ve had some great matches in the past, including a nice one earlier this year where she came out the victor—it was super close,” Venus said of Suarez-Navarro. “When I play her, I know that I have to be concentrated because she’s just a great competitor. She’s always played well against me, too. I had some luck because I think she missed a few shots today, and it gave me some openings.”

It will be the first all-time meeting between Venus and Konta.

Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza knocked off Ana Ivanovic 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals.

Muguruza played nearly flawless tennis over the final two sets, dropping just one of the final 13 games after losing the opening set.

“I was expecting a difficult match. In the first set I think Ana was playing good—I was playing good also,” said Muguruza. “But I don’t know, in the important moments I didn’t find my best level. In the second and the third I found my way, and my tennis level was great. So I’m very happy with my improvement throughout the match.”

The fifth-seeded Spaniard will meet Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who ousted Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-2.

15th seeded Italian Roberta Vinci contributed to the day of upsets in Wuhan, defeating third-seed and defending champion Petra Kvitova 7-6(3), 6-2.

Vinci, who pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the sport’s history by downing Serena Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals, edged Kvitova in a first-set tiebreaker before routing her in the second set.

“Against Petra, it’s always tough to play—she’s an incredible player,” said Vinci. “She won last year here—but I played a really good match.”

Vinci will next play another Czech, eighth-seed Karolina Pliskova, who came back from a set down to knock out 12th seed Elina Svitolina 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The other Wuhan quarterfinal will pit sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber against the winner of Barbora Stryocova and Coco Vandeweghe.
