Both the men and women’s tennis programs at Hofstra won their respective season openers over the weekend as each notched victories over Saint Peter's.

The men got its season started with a clean 7-0 sweep over Saint Peter’s, opening up Jeffrey Menaker’s debut as Director of Tennis with a victory.

The Pride opened things up by taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, and the singles play did the rest to clinch the victory.

Freshman Marcus Smith, a former standout at Cardozo High School in Queens, led the way for the Pride with a 6-3, 6-2 over Daniil Ivanov.

The Hofstra women also triumphed over Saint Peters, beating the Peacocks 6-1 in its season debut.

Senior Sarah Bown led the charge with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Melian Puigventos at first singles, while freshman Michelle Kaplan won 6-0, 6-3 over Lucia Radovic at second singles as Hofstra cruised to the victory.

"On the men's side, the doubles was hard fought and I was very pleased with our Brazilian combo of Guilherme Ferneda and senior captain, Leo Pires, for gutting out at the win in the #3 spot. The singles showed the strength and depth of our roster as all of the matches were straight sets," said Menaker. "The women were more conving in sweeping the doubles. We had some close sets and lost the #6 flight, but ultimately, all of our singles wins came in straight sets. St. Peter's is a tough place to play and I was pleased with our team's response to the adversity."

Up next for both programs is Lafayette on Saturday, February 27 at Point Set Indoor Racquet Club in Oceanside.

Stony Brook Men Knock off Queens College

The Stony Brook Seawolves improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Queens College on Friday afternoon at the Queens College Tennis Center.

After securing the doubles point, Stony Brook would win four of the six singles matches in straight sets, led by junior Raphael Termat’s 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles, to roll to the road victory.

Stony Brook will look to improve to 3-0 on the season when it plays NJIT on March 5.

NYIT Men Beat Adelphi 8-1

NYIT moved to 3-0 on the season on Friday afternoon, defeating Adelphi 8-1 in an all-Long Island battle at the Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis facility.

The Bears would win two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, but it was the singles play that anchored NYIT. It won all six singles contests, five of them in straight sets, led by ECC’s preseason player of the year Tomas Lieb’s 6-1, 6-4 triumph at third singles.

NYIT will return to action on February 26 on the road against Merrimack.
