Playing in her first match since a round of 32 loss in Miami, Caroline Wozniacki won her Aegon Open first round match on Tuesday, downing Cagla Buyukakcay 7-5, 6-3 in Nottingham.

“It’s nice to be back,” said Wozniacki. “It felt nice to be back on court. There’s always things I’d like to do better, but all in all, for a first match back in so many weeks, it’s just great to be back there.”

A right ankle injury forced the former world number one to miss the entire clay court season, so it felt good for her to return with a victory after missing more than two months.

“It was 10 weeks at home, working hard and trying to get back in good shape and form,” added Wozniacki. “It feels much more different to play a match than practice, and you feel a little bit sore. At the end, it’s a good day and I get another one tomorrow.”

The Dane converted on six break point chances, and despite letting a 5-1 lead slip to 3-5, was able to close out Buyukakcay in straight sets.

“You can kind of feel a little bit of rust out there, but it could have been a lot worse. I’m pleased with the result, and the way I fought,” said Wozniacki. “I just focused on myself and what I needed to do. I had my own game plan in mind, and figured the rest out as [I] go along.”

Wozniacki will take on Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in the second round. Kontaveit knocked off American Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-1 on Monday.

Also in Nottingham on Tuesday, American Alison Riske upended seventh seed Mona Barthel 6-2, 6-1 while Andrea Hlavackova defeated fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer 7-5, 7-6(7).
