New Jersey native Christina McHale opened up her U.S. Open Series campaign with a straights set victory on Tuesday, moving past Romania’s Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Citi Open second round.

McHale used a dominant return game to move through in straight sets. She broke twice in the opening set, and added three more break points in the second set to advance in 90 minutes.

In the second round, McHale will take on fellow American Jessica Pegula, who knocked out Aleksandra Wozniack 6-2, 6-2 to win her opening round match on Tuesday.

Italy’s Camila Giorgi pulled off the day’s biggest upset as she ousted fifth-seed Eugenie Bouchard 7-5, 6-4. Giorgi will play Austria’s Tamira Paszek, who was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over American qualifier Lauren Albanese.

Out west at the Bank of the West Classic, American qualifier Julia Boserup came back from a set down to defeat Japan’s Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Boserup will take on third-seed Johanna Konta.
