Venus Williams reached the Bank of the West Classic quarterfinals on Wednesday, hanging on to defeat Magda Linette 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2 to book her spot in the final eight.

The top-seeded American, playing in a Premier level tournament for the first time as a top seed since 2004, broke three times and won 76 percent of the points on her first serve in the final set to avoid the potential upset.

“She’s such a fighter…A lot of times, I wasn’t sure how I lost the point,” Venus said of Linette. But she was able to kick her game into a “third gear, or fifth or sixth gear, or whichever gear it is that you use to get the win.”

Venus will look to find that gear again when she takes on the winner of Americans Sachia Vickery and CiCi Bellis in the quarterfinals.

Third-seed Johanna Konta rolled past American Julia Boserup 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals, where she will play Saisai Zheng, who was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over seventh-seed Alize Cornet.

Misaki Doi was the other winner in Stanford on Wednesday. The Japan native beat her compatriot Nao Hibono 6-3, 6-4. She will play the winner of second seed Dominika Cibulkova and Urszula Radwanska.
