The Bank of the West Classic final on Sunday juxtaposed the two careers of Great Britain’s Johanna Konta and American Venus Williams as Konta was seeking her first title while Venus was searching for the 50th of her career.

Konta would come out victorious, hanging on for a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win to win the Stanford title, the first of her career.

“It’s quite an incredibly humbling experience,” said Konta. “It’s a validation of all the hard work you’ve already put in and a motivator on the things you want to keep improving on, and the lengths you might go in order to come that much better.”

After Venus fought back to win the second set, Konta dominated the deciding third set. She opened up an early 3-1 lead, and would go on to serve out the set and match for the maiden title of her career.

It was a wonderful week in our nation’s capital for Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer, who captured both the singles and doubles titles at the Citi Open.

First up was singles play, and Wickmayer dismissed American Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-2 for the fifth title of her career.

“It just feels great to be playing good tennis again and to really be stepping up my game the last couple of months,” said Wickmayer. “Winning titles, it will never be usual. It’s such a great feeling to win titles and to hold that trophy at the end of the week.”

She wasn’t done, however, as Wickmayer paired with Monica Niculescu to beat Shuko Aoyama and Risa Ozaki 6-4, 6-3 in the women’s doubles final.
