The 2016 U.S. Open begins Monday morning and the year’s final Grand Slam is wasting no time in getting the stars on court as four former champions plus a number of Americans get their campaigns underway on Day One.

On Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Cinderella of last year’s U.S. Open, Roberta Vinci, kicks things off against German Anna-Lena Friedsam. Vinci ended Serena William’s chances at a Calendar Grand Slam with her semifinal win last year. The Italian’s 2016 has been underwhelming, losing 10 of her last 16 matches including an early exit at the Connecticut Open in New Haven last week. The two have met just once before, earlier this year at the Australian Open, when Friedsam came back from a bageled first set to upend Vinci.

The winner of that Australian Open title is the second match on Ashe as second-seed Angelique Kerber takes on Polona Hercog. Kerber has a chance to overtake Serena Williams as the number one ranked player in the world depending on how her, Serena, Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska fare in Flushing.

Rafael Nadal will look to build on his Olympic success when the two-time U.S. Open champion takes on Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin on Monday. Nadal is a dark horse candatade for many people picking their champion, and with Novak Djokovic struggling—somewhat—recently and Andy Murray having played a lot of high-pressure tennis recently, the Spaniard could be due for a deep run. He will look to get off the court early on Monday and avoid any first-round troubles which could plague him later in the tournament.

The surprise champion from a couple of years ago, Marin Cilic, will look to build off his recent title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, when he squares off against Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva in the first match on Louis Armstrong Stadium. He reached the semifinals a year ago and there may be something about the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center’s hard courts that bring out the best in the Croat, and he begins his quest for a second Grand Slam title on Monday. Cilic’s match will be followed by former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova as she takes on Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.

French Open champion Garbine Muguruza will look to rebound from some up and down player since her triumph at Roland Garros and the Spaniard will play Belgium’s Elise Bertens.

One of the most intriguing matchup of the opening round is the final one on Armstrong as Americans Jack Sock and Taylor Fritz do battle. The two met earlier this year at the Australian Open where Sock outlasted his younger compatriot in five tough sets.

The aforementioned Novak Djokovic begins the night session on Ashe against a tricky Jerzy Janowicz. We last saw Djokovic losing to Juan Martin del Potro in the opening round of the Olympics, and the defending champion may be out to make a statement in his U.S. Open opener. Another all-American matchup finishes the night on Ashe as eighth-seeded Madison Keys takes on Allison Riske.

There are two other all-American matchups on Monday’s slate. Teenager Frances Tiafoe takes on 20th seed John Isner and on the women’s side, USTA Wild Card Series winner Kayla Day will face off against Madison Brengle.

Other Americans in action on Monday: Taylor Townsend, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Samantha Crawford, Brian Baker, CiCi Bellis, Danielle Collins, Bjorn Fratangelo, Christina McHale, Mackenzie McDonald, Lauren Davis, Shelby Rogers, Ryan Harrison and Irina Falconi.
