Murray Notches Routine Victory Over Granollers to Advance in Flushing Meadows

September 1, 2016 | By Brian Coleman

With the rest of play suspended while rain poured down over Flushing Meadows, the new roof over Arthur Ashe proved pivotal, as world number two Andy Murray moved past Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 under the roof to reach the U.S. Open third round.

Murray jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and had an opportunity to serve for the match at 5-3, but a long deuce came finished in Granollers favor and the Spaniard was able to get things back on serve. But that would be quickly dismissed, as Murray responded with another break to wrap up the one hour and seven minute first set.

He would cut down on his errors in the second set and played a much cleaner set, breaking twice in three chances and winning 27 of the 42 total points to easily win the second. Granollers hung tough in the third, but Murray was just too solid on his own service games. The recent Olympic gold medalist committed just five unforced errors and won 20 of the 25 points on his own serve to close out the match in straight sets and push through into the third round.

“I felt I did pretty well. It was a 20-25 minute period in the match where it was tough and tricky. I got myself in a situation that maybe I could have avoided if I had taken one or two of the set points that I had at 5-2 or 5-3,” said Murray. “But, I thought I did pretty well. I thought there were some good points in there. That period of the match was very tough. I didn’t play well during that period and managed to come through it thankfully and play some good stuff in the second and third sets.”

Murray moves into a matchup in round three with the winner of 30th seed Gilles Simon and Paolo Lorenzi.

In Men’s Doubles, Long Island native Scott Lipsky and partner Eric Butorac fell in straight sets to the American-South African duo of Rajeev Ram and Raven Klaasen. The seventh-seeded Ram and Klaasen rolled 6-3, 6-4 in a little over an hour to advance.
