World number one Novak Djokovic began his quest for a fourth straight title at the BNP Paribas Masters 1000 in Paris, knocking off Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-3, 6-4 to book his spot in the Round of 16.

Djokovic was routine against Muller, breaking him once in each set and saving the only break point he faced.

“It’s a moment of happiness. It’s a real pleasure to come back to Paris after what I did at Roland Garros this year,” said Djokovic, who completed the career Grand Slam with his French Open triumph earlier this year. “In the last few years, I’ve played my best tennis here. It’s the end of the season and you have to find that last bit of energy.”

He will look to find some more of that energy when he takes on Grigor Dimitrov for a spot in the quarterfinals. The 14th seed Dimitrov won the first set 6-3 against Marcos Baghdatis before the Cypriot was forced to retire.

Fifth-seed Kei Nishikori of Japan got past Viktor Troicki 6-2, 7-5 to set up a matchup with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The 11th seeded Frenchman beat Albert Ramos-Vanolis 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

American Jack Sock powered past Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-4 and will play Richard Gasquet, who will look to eliminate two Americans in a row after his straight-sets win over Steve Johnson in the second-round.
