The round-robin play in the John McEnroe group at the ATP World Tour Finals in London got underway on Monday, and Japan’s Kei Nishikori won the day’s first match with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over Stan Wawrinka at The O2.

Nishikori was the more aggressive player and it showed throughout the match as he broke Wawrinka twice in each set, and never faced a break point on his own serve.

“Today, I think I was very solid from the first game and I was very confident,” said Nishikori. “It wasn’t easy against Stan. He hits a lot of slice and he mixed up a lot of shots. I tried to play solid and I thought  I played a good match today.”

Nishikori is still vying to move up the rankings before the tournament is over, and his win against the third-ranked Wawrinka will go a long way in doing so.

Later Monday, world number one Andy Murray will take on Marin Cilic in a John McEnroe group round robin match.
