USTA Eastern will conclude the year at its Annual Conference from January 27-29 at the Renaissance Hotel in White Plains, where it will honor and celebrate the people who have had an impact on our tennis community.

Among those who will be honored are several Long Islanders, both juniors and adults, for the work and dedication they have shown.

One of those awardees will be Craig Fligstein, who will be receiving the Special Service Award. Fligstein was instrumental in bringing revamped tennis courts and expanded tennis programming to veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Northport.

In addition to being a longtime executive with the United Way of Long Island, Fligstein has volunteered with the USTA Long Island Region since 2004, including six years as a Regional Board Member and six years (and currently) as Treasurer. A USPTA member, he also volunteers his time in helping children from economically challenged households to receive free lessons. He has helped to cultivate the talent of low-income children to position them for college scholarships, volunteers with kids in foster care, at the Northport VA Medical Center and at the Milton Olive Middle School in Wyandanch.
