McEnroe Discusses PowerShares Series, Future of Men’s Tennis on WFAN

John McEnroe was on WFAN on Tuesday to promote the upcoming PowerShares Series event at the Barclays Center.

One of the all-time greats and native New Yorker John McEnroe hopped onto WFAN on Tuesday afternoon to talk about the upcoming PowerShares Series event at the Barclays Center as well as the current state of men’s tennis in the United States.

“The big difference for tennis right now is that the best athletes in our country are playing football, they’re playing basketball,” the seven-time Grand Slam champion told WFAN’s Marc Malusis. “To some extent, it’s easier in schools to get on even a soccer field. And the cost of it [tennis]…it’s too expensive.”

McEnroe did express hope for the future, though, eluding to the crop of young American men who have burst onto the scene, most notably Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe, but said one of his goals is to create the next champion out of New York.

“After all, I grew up in Queens. I have a lot of history at the U.S. Open. I love New York. I’m biased, but I think it’s the greatest city in the world,” said McEnroe. “Wouldn’t it be great if the best player in the world was from here?”

McEnroe will take on Jim Courier in a one-set semifinal on Saturday, January 7 at the PowerShares Series QQQ Cup at the Barclays Center, and the other semifinal will see James Blake take on Andy Roddick.
