Petra Kvitova was attacked by a man with a knife at her Czech home on Tuesday in what police are describing as an apparent attempted burglary.

Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, suffered injuries to her left-hand but was able to fend off the attacker, whom police described as a 35-year old man.

“Thank you for all your heartwarming messages today. As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife,” Kvitova said in a statement. “In my attempt to defend myself I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery.”

According to some reports, the man apparently posed as a maintenance worker to gain access to her home, and Kvitova suffered 11 cuts to her left-hand while fighting off the attack. The assailant fled the scene, and Czech police have launched a manhunt to find the suspect.

“The main thing for me now is that the doctors find out what is the condition of my hand. I trust them and believe that everything will end up well,” Kvitova added. “I have the best possible care and I’m in touch with my loved ones. The worst is behind me.”
