Novak Djokovic became the first to reach the Aegon International semifinals, holding off American Donald Young 6-2, 7-6(9) on Thursday in Eastbourne.

“He served for the set, had a set a point and then had set point in the tiebreak,” Djokovic said of Young’s improved play in the second set. “Obviously, it could have gone easily his way. But it didn’t, and I’m just glad the way I kind of held my composure, my nerves. This is the kid of match situations that I was looking forward to having, and I’m glad it happened today and I managed to overcome that.”

Daniil Medvedev of Russia upset fourth-seeded American Steve Johnson 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to book his spot in the semifinals, where he will take on Djokovic.

Seventh-seed Frenchman Richard Gasquet moved past third-seeded American John Isner 6-3, 6-2, to set up a matchup with his countryman Gael Monfils.

Monfils knocked off Bernard Tomic of Australia 7-6(4), 6-0.
