Belgium’s Elise Mertens notched the biggest win of her career on Monday, stunning fourth-seed and world number one hopeful Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-0 to book her spot in the Australian Open semifinals.

“I have no words, I don’t know what to say,” said Mertens. “I have so many mixed emotions. I gave it all today, I fought. I got a little stressed at the end so I played my game and it went well today. She’s a great mover, she’s a really strong player. She started well at the beginning of the year so I knew it was going to be tough. So I tried to play aggressive, make her move and come to the net a bit more–just tried to play aggressive on the court.”

Mertens was the more aggressive player and took the match to Svitolina. She burst out to a 5-2 lead in the first set and even after the Ukrainian got one break back to trim the lead to 4-5, Mertens calmly served out the opener.

The second set was all hers, hitting 10 winners and converting on three break points to win all six games and cruise past Svitolina.

She will look to continue her run against second-seed Caroline Wozniacki, who hung on to defeat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-2 to reach the seventh Grand Slam semifinal of her career.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be that easy. A lot of games in the first set were quite close, but I was proud that I managed to stay cool,” said Wozniacki. “She improved in the second set and made me step back to the baseline. I stepped a bit closer to the baseline in the third set and I feel I had a little more energy in the end.”

Wozniacki held a match point in the second set before Suarez Navarro leveled the frame and forced a tiebreak. The Spaniard outplayed Wozniacki in the breaker to force the third set, but it was the Dane found the extra gear in the decider.

She broke for a 2-1 lead in the third and never looked back, breaking one more time for a 5-2 lead, and proceeded to serve out the match in the next game.

Wozniacki has won the only previous meeting between her and Mertens, a three-setter on clay in Bastad last year.

“She’s had an amazing start to the year,” Wozniacki said of her semifinal opponent. “It’s gonna be a tough one.”
