Americans Christina McHale was one of three American women to advance to the Miami Open third round on Thursday as she defeated 25th seeded Czech Barbora Strycova  6-1, 6-4.

McHale saved 10 break points throughout the one hour and 49 minute match. She broke Strycova four times.

In the third round, McHale will square off against third-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, who advanced to the third round after American Amanada Anisimova withdrew with an injury.

Playing near where she grew up, U.S. Open champion and 13th seed Sloane Stephens cruised past Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday.

“I grew up in South Florida, so this is one of my favorite tournaments of the year,” said Stephens. “I get to see all my friends, all my family. Playing here is incredible.”

Stephens moves into a matchup against Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu, who knocked off 17th seed Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-3.

American Alison Riske may have notched the day’s biggest upset though as she ousted seventh-seed Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-1. Riske draws a showdown with Yafan Wang of China, who knocked out 12th seed Julia Goerges.

Top-seed Simona Halep, fifth-seed Karolina Pliskova, 10th seed Angelique Kerber, 30th seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Victoria Azarenka all advanced to the third round with victories on Thursday.
