All-American Matchup Sees Roddick Defeats Blake at Winston-Salem Open

Fifth seeded American Andy Roddick defeated wild card and fellow American James Blake 7-6(6), 7-6(6) in a second-round clash at the 2102 Winston-Salem Open, taking his lead in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series to 9-3. Roddick dropped serve early in the match, but drew level with Blake at five-all before edging the opening set tie-break. He fought off two set points down 4-5 in the second set, and proceeded to claim the victory. The 21st-ranked Roddick notched his 20th match win of the season.

In doubles action, Merrick, N.Y. native Scott Lipsky and partner Santiago Gonzalez upset the third-seeded team of Colin Fleming & Ross Hutchins 7-6(7), 7-6(3). Gonzalez & Lipsky had also defeated the Brits in the Newport final last month.

In other second round singles action, 21-year-old Belgian David Goffin defeated the10th-seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Goffin has won consecutive tour-level matches for the first time since reaching the Wimbledon third round.

Top-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will meet Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the second round of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tournament. Three weeks ago, Tsonga won their first-round meeting 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 at London 2012 Olympics Tennis Event. Bellucci was leading 2006 Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 3-1 on Monday, when Baghdatis retired due to a back injury after 93 minutes of play.

Poland’s Lukasz Kubot defeated former world number five Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Kubot, who converted four of his 11 break point opportunities, will next play eighth-seeded Frenchman and 2011 finalist Julien Benneteau.

Donald Young won his first tour-level match since February with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. American qualifier Michael McClune recorded his first ATP World Tour match win with a 6-1, 6-4 win over 52nd-ranked Alejandro Falla of Colombia in 63 minutes. Robin Haase also advanced to the second round, beating former world number three-ranked Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-3. Haase, who won the clay-court title in Kitzbuhel last month, improved to a 19-20 season record.
