Port Washington defeated Syosset 5-2 in a Nassau County semifinal matchup on Wednesday afternoon, extending its winning streak to 15 matches and advancing to its first county final since 2013.
The Vikings were once again led by its 1-2 punch at the top of its lineup: Thea Rabman at first singles and Martine McGowan at second singles. The two paired up to win the doubles title in Nassau’s Individual Championships on Sunday afternoon, and went back to the singles court to help lead Port Washington on Wednesday.
Rabman defeated Jessie Levy 6-1, 6-2 to earn the team’s first point, and soon after McGowan downed Caroline Lee 6-2, 6-1 to give Port Washington the early lead.
Martine McGowan won her match at second singles to help lead Port Washington into its first Nassau County final since 2013.
After the first doubles tandem of Brittany Polevikov and Sofia Walzer won 6-2, 6-1 over Sara Wong, Port Washington got its clinching win from third doubles as Kelsey Sy and Mia Froccaro notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Olivia Tiegerman and Alex Flicker.
Since a season-opening defeat to Great Neck North, Port Washington has now won 15 straight matches, and will play for the county title on Friday afternoon against Roslyn.
“We knew we were going to be good, but we didn’t know how good we were going to be,” said head coach Shane Helfner. “When we started putting this winning streak together, we gained more and more confidence, and started beating teams the second time around. We believe we can win every point in the lineup; a big strength of our team is our depth.”
Port Washington will look to defeat Roslyn for a third time this season in Friday’s final. The Bulldogs defeated Great Neck North in its semifinal on Tuesday.
“Roslyn is a really good team. They have depth like us, they’re well-coached. Their doubles are always strong,” said Helfner. “We’ve had some success against them this year, but anything can happen on a given day…We’ll be ready.”
