Rogers Cup Action Opens in Montreal

On Monday night at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Florian Mayer of Germany defeated Bernard Tomic, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. He will play defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic in the second round. Janko Tipsarevic was also booted out of the first round, losing to Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, 6-4, 6-3. The 16th-seeded Tipsarevic has advanced to only three quarterfinals in his last 15 tournaments.

Kei Nishikori defeated Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Wild card Jesse Levine of Canada beat Belgian Xavier Malisse, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to earn a second round spot in a match against Rafa Nadal. Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis advanced to the second round after defeating Feliciano Lopez, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Gulbis is a potential third-round opponent for Andy Murray. Ivan Dodig of Croatia beat Slovenian Grega Zemlja, 6-1, 6-1, as Dodig will next face sixth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro.

Pablo Andujar triumphed with a straight-sets win over Israeli qualifier Amir Weintraub. Both Andujar and Dodig only entered the main draw following the withdrawals of Viktor Troicki and Marin Cilic.

Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated Czech Lukas Rozol in a third set tiebreak. Duo Benoit Paire and Marinko Matosevic won their match against German pair Philipp Kohlscreiber and Benjamin Becker.

On the women’s side of the draw, Roberta Vinci, world number 12, advanced to the second round defeating Julia Goerges, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. American Sloane Stephens also moved into the second round after beating Kristina Mladenovic, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Laura Robson of Britain was forced to withdraw before her singles match against Yanina Wickmayer due to a right wrist injury. She was replaced by Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who was defeated by Wickmayer, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Flavia Pennetta entered the second round after winning her match against Urszula Radwanska, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In other play, Dominika Cibulkova defeated Jana Cepelova, 7-5, 6-4, Mona Barthel beat Jie Zheng, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (1), and qualifier Olga Savchuk lost to Sorana Cirstea, 6-2, 6-3.

Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova both pulled out of the event with injuries, and Serena Williams remains the top seed on the women’s singles side of the draw.
