Nadal Beats Fognini To Reach Miami Final

Rafael Nadal advanced to the fifth Miami Open final of his career on Friday afternoon, moving past Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-5 in the first semifinal in Key Biscayne.

Nadal was sharp from the onset. He was dominant on serve, losing just four points on his own serve in the opening set, racing to the 6-1 first set win in just 26 minutes.

The Spaniard tried to take firm grasp of the match early in the second set as he set up five break points in Fognini’s first two service games, but the Italian saved all five of them to keep pace. At 5-5, however, his level dropped and he double-faulted on break point to hand Nadal a 6-5 lead.

Nadal wasted no time in the ensuing service game, winning four straight points to consolidate and close out the victory.

In the final, Nadal will take on the winner of Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios, who will square off Friday night in the other semifinal.

On Saturday afternoon, Johanna Konta and Caroline Wozniacki will play for the women’s singles final.
