Commack Edges Hills East in Top Suffolk Battle

Two of Suffolk County’s top teams met in an early season showdown on Monday afternoon and the anticipated match did not disappoint, as Commack edged Hills East 4-3 in League I.

The win improves Commack to 4-0 while handing the Thunderbirds of Hills East its first defeat of the season.

Commack picked up wins from the first two singles courts, as Spencer Brachman beat Abhinav Srivastava 6-1, 6-1 at first singles, and Peter Yu defeated Avi Anand 6-1, 6-4 at second singles.

Hills East would pick up the third singles flight as Yoel Yamus beat Sol Yoon 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and the match would get evened up at 3-3 as Hills East won first and second doubles, and Commack captured the third doubles flight.

The score line left the match up to the fourth singles court, as Commack seventh grader Matt Strogach took on Albert Cheng. Strogach played an excellent second set to record the 6-4, 6-0 win and clinch the Commack victory.

“Hills East has a very strong program every year and is extremely well-coached. Our guys had to battle at every position and I couldn’t be more proud of their determination and fight they showed today to get the four points,” said Commack head coach Shane Helfner. “We have higher goals than ever for this year and we feel today’s win proves that we are for real.”
