Massapequa Beats South Side In Huge Conference II Showdown

The Massapequa Chiefs nailed down a huge win on Wednesday afternoon, beating South Side 4-3 in a battle for a second place in the Conference II-B standings in a showdown that carried with it playoff implications.

Matthew Musalo and Matthew Waterhouse won their respective singles matches in straight sets to notch victories for Massapequa. Its other two wins would come from the second and fourth doubles courts, as John Probst and Joe Menichini won at second doubles and Michael Grisanti and Steven Shulte took the fourth doubles court.

"I’m very proud of my guys efforts," said Massapequa head coach Mike Pavlides. "We have been playing a man down for the last several matches, and the guys have risen to the challenge in front of them."

With the win, Massapequa improves to 9-2 on the season, while South Side drops to 7-4.

Holding serve atop the Conference II-B standings, who won for the 11th straight time with a 7-0 win over Valley Stream Central on Wednesday.

Port Washington won its third straight match with a 7-0 triumph over Friends Academy. The Vikings are now 8-3 and remain in third place in Nassau’s top conference, behind Syosset and Roslyn.

Wantagh remained unbeaten on the year, improving to 11-0 with a 7-0 win over Hempstead. Matt Russo and John King helped lead the way for Wantagh with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Luis Coreas and Jose Guerra at fourth doubles.
