Australia’s Nick Kyrgios was forced to retire with an injury during his opening round match against American Donald Young at the Aegon Championships on Monday.
At 4-4 in the opening set, Kyrgios slipped at the back of the court and took a hard fall and he required treatment on his left hip. He would continue playing, but after losing the first set tiebreaker he abruptly retired from the match.
“I have been playing with a sore hip for a long time,” said Kyrgios. “I felt it was painful and it’s not really worth it.”
The injury immediately created concern that the 2014 quarterfinalist would not be ready for Wimbledon, but the 22-year old quieted those concerns.
“Yeah, 100 percent,” he said when asked if he will still be playing Wimbledon. “I mean I’d play Wimbledon if I was injured pretty bad anyway. I’m here anyway. I don’t really have time to go home or anything. Yeah, I will be playing, for sure.”
