American Serena Williams defeated Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Friday at the Qatar Total Open in Doha to recapture the world number one spot atop the WTA Women’s Singles Rankings. Serena had defeated Kvitova in straight sets all three times they had previously played. Serena becomes the oldest female to hold the number one ranking at the age of 31 years, four months and 24 days. Up next for Serena is a semifinals encounter and re-match of the 2012 Olympic Gold Medal match as she faces Russian Maria Sharapova.

"I’m so sensitive nowadays, I’m always crying! I’ve just been through so much and never thought I’d be here again," said Serena, who recovered from 4-1 down in the third set as she fought back tears in her post-match interview.

"I don’t know how I did it—I really don’t know," Serena said. "I just hung in there and she was playing so well. Every time I looked around she was hitting a winner. I just tried to stay in there."

Serena begins her 124th non-consecutive week as the number one player in the world on Monday.
