Jo-Wilfried Tsonga saved a match point before overcoming top-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the finals of the Open 13. The third-seeded Tsonga won his first title of the season and 10th of his career. Tsonga had to wait until the third game of the last set before getting his first break of serve, when Berdych netted a forehand. The 2008 Australian Open runner-up clinched the victory when Berdych hit a service return long.

“This is a great victory,” said Tsonga. “I stayed in the match even when it was very difficult and waited for my chance. I survived and took my chance when it came. I’m very happy. This shows me that I’m on the right way. The draw was very strong here."

Meanwhile, number four-ranked David Ferrer retained the Buenos Aires Open title with a 6-4 3-6 6-1 win over Stanislas Wawrinka on Sunday. Ferrer took his tally of career titles to 20 after winning his third final in four years on the clay center court at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. It was a fifth consecutive Spanish win in Buenos Aires after victories for Tommy Robredo in 2009, Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2010 and Nicolas Almagro in 2011. David Nalbandian was Argentina’s last winner in 2008.

“Spanish tennis is going through a marvelous time,” Ferrer said. “In the last 10 to 15 years, there [have been] great tennis players. There are always a couple of players in the Top 10 and because of that, since 2009, there have been only Spanish players winning this tournament.”
